To repurpose one long video into Shorts, Reels and TikToks, find the moments that make sense on their own, cut each one to a clear start and finish, reframe it to vertical, and add a new hook and captions. A single podcast episode, webinar or YouTube video can often produce several short clips, which means one recording session can fill your feed for weeks.
Here is the step by step process our editors follow.
Step 1: Pick the right source video
Some long videos repurpose better than others. Good sources include:
Podcast and interview episodes
Webinars and live sessions
Tutorials and walkthroughs
Talks and presentations
Long YouTube videos with several distinct points
Videos where one person explains clear ideas to camera are the easiest to cut down.
Step 2: Find standalone moments
Watch or skim the transcript and mark any section that works without context. Look for:
Strong opinions or surprising statements
One tip, explained from start to finish
Short stories with a clear ending
Questions and their answers
Funny or emotional reactions
A transcript makes this much faster. Most editing tools can create one automatically, and you can search it for key phrases.
Step 3: Cut each clip tight
Each short clip should have:
A hook in the first seconds, often the most interesting line moved to the front
One idea that is fully explained
A clean ending, not a sentence that trails off
Remove pauses, filler words and side comments. Short form viewers have less patience than long form viewers.
Step 4: Reframe to vertical
Long videos are usually horizontal. For Shorts, Reels and TikTok you need 9:16. Options:
Crop to follow the speaker, adjusting the frame when they move
Stack two speakers top and bottom for interviews
Place the horizontal clip in the middle with a title above and captions below
Check that nobody's head gets cut off and that text stays clear of the app buttons.
Step 5: Add captions and a title
Burned in captions help people who watch without sound. Add a short title at the top that states what the clip is about. Keep the brand style the same across every clip so they look like a series.
Step 6: Schedule them out
Do not post every clip on the same day. Spread them across several weeks, mixing them with your other content. Track which clips perform best, and use those topics for your next long video.
A simple workflow
| Step | Tool or task | |---|---| | Transcript | Auto captions in your editor | | Pick moments | Mark timestamps in a doc | | Edit | CapCut, Premiere Pro or similar | | Captions | Auto captions, then correct errors | | Schedule | Meta Business Suite, YouTube Studio, TikTok |
If you are deciding which editor to use, see our comparison of CapCut vs Adobe Premiere Pro.
