How to write Instagram captions that get comments: strong first lines, one clear question, short paragraphs and calls to action that people actually answer.

Instagram captions get comments when the first line earns a tap on "more," the body gives one useful or relatable point, and the caption ends with a single, easy question. Specific questions ("Which color would you pick?") get far more replies than vague ones ("Thoughts?"), because people can answer them in a few words.
Here is how we write captions for client accounts, with examples you can adapt.
The first line does most of the work
Only the start of your caption shows before Instagram cuts it off. Treat that line like a headline. Good first lines:
State a surprising point: "Most kitchen remodels go over budget for one reason."
Call out the reader: "If your Reels stop at 200 views, read this."
Promise something: "3 ways to make your blowout last until Friday."
Avoid opening with your brand name, a greeting or a row of emojis. None of those give anyone a reason to keep reading.
Keep the body short and easy to scan
After the hook, deliver one idea. Use short lines and line breaks so the caption is easy to read on a phone. A few rules:
One point per caption, not five
Plain words, the way you would talk to a customer
A line break every one or two sentences
Emojis only where they help, such as marking list items
Longer captions can work for stories and tips, but every line still has to earn its place.
End with one question people can answer quickly
Comments come from questions that are easy and fun to answer. Compare:
| Weak | Better | |---|---| | Thoughts? | Left or right, which would you choose? | | Let us know what you think! | What is the first thing you notice in this room? | | Comment below | Drop a 🔥 if you would try this |
Ask only one question per caption. Two questions split attention and usually get fewer replies.
Match the call to action to the goal
Not every post needs comments. Decide what you want from each one:
Comments: ask a simple question
Saves: say "Save this for your next trip to the salon"
Shares: say "Send this to someone planning a renovation"
Enquiries: say "DM us 'QUOTE' and we will send prices"
One call to action per post keeps it clear.
Reply to every comment
Replying keeps the conversation going and shows new visitors that a real person runs the page. Answer with more than "thanks." Ask a follow up question or add a tip, and the thread grows on its own.
Mistakes we see often
Copying the same caption across every platform without changes
Burying the offer at the end of a long paragraph
Hashtag blocks bigger than the caption itself
Captions that describe the photo instead of adding something to it
