Retargeting ads show your business again to people who have already interacted with you, such as visiting your website, watching your videos or engaging with your Instagram. Because these people already know you, retargeting usually brings cheaper leads and sales than ads to cold audiences. To run it well, group people by how close they came to buying, show each group a message that fits, and cap how often they see your ads.
How retargeting works
When someone visits your site, a tracking tag such as the Meta Pixel or Google tag records the visit. Ad platforms use that data to build an audience of past visitors you can show ads to later. Platforms can also build audiences from people who watched your videos, engaged with your page or opened a lead form.
Retargeting only works if tracking is set up correctly. Our tracking and analytics team handles that setup, including the Conversions API for more reliable data.
Audiences to build
Group people by how warm they are:
| Audience | Who is in it | How warm | |---|---|---| | Video viewers | Watched a good part of a video | Warm | | Social engagers | Liked, commented, saved or messaged | Warm | | Website visitors | Visited any page | Warmer | | Service or product page visitors | Viewed a specific offer | Hot | | Form or cart starters | Began but did not finish | Hottest |
Exclude people who already became customers, unless you are selling them something new.
What to show each group
Warm audiences know your name but not much else. Show proof and education: reviews, case studies, before and after content, a short explainer.
Warmer audiences have seen your site. Remind them of the offer and answer common doubts: pricing structure, process, guarantees you actually offer.
Hot audiences were close to acting. Make the next step easy: a direct link back to the form or cart, a reminder of what they were looking at, or a limited time reason to act if you genuinely have one.
Keep it from feeling creepy
Retargeting can annoy people if done badly. Good habits:
Set a frequency cap or watch frequency so people do not see the same ad constantly
Rotate creatives every few weeks
Stop showing ads after a sensible window, often a few weeks after the visit
Avoid naming exactly what someone looked at in a way that feels intrusive
Budget and expectations
Retargeting audiences are smaller than cold audiences, so the budget needed is usually small too. If your audience is tiny because your site gets little traffic, retargeting will be limited until you bring in more visitors with other campaigns, SEO or social content.
A simple starting setup
Install and test the Meta Pixel and Google tag
Build a "website visitors, last 30 days" audience and a "video viewers" audience
Create one proof ad and one offer ad
Exclude existing customers
Run for a few weeks and compare cost per lead with your cold campaigns
Our paid ads and lead generation team builds retargeting into every campaign so warm visitors do not slip away.
