Most local businesses should run both Facebook and Instagram from one shared plan, but put the most effort into the one their customers use. Facebook usually reaches older customers, local groups and people checking reviews. Instagram usually reaches younger customers and works best for visual businesses. Since Meta lets you post to both at once, the real choice is where you spend time on replies, Stories and ads.
Here is how to decide.
Who you reach on each
Facebook is strong for:
Customers who are older or more established, such as homeowners and parents
Local community groups where people ask for recommendations
Reviews and recommendations shown on your page
Events, longer posts and links
Instagram is strong for:
Younger customers and anyone who discovers businesses through short video
Visual services such as hair, beauty, food, fitness, interiors and fashion
Reels that reach people who do not follow you yet
Quick enquiries through DMs
Think about your best customers. Ask a few of them which app they open most. Their answer matters more than any general rule.
What to post on each
You can share the same core content, but small changes help:
| | Facebook | Instagram | |---|---|---| | Video | Reels and longer clips | Reels first | | Images | Photos, albums, updates | Carousels and single images | | Text | Longer posts work | Short captions, strong first line | | Links | Clickable in posts | Mainly the profile link | | Community | Groups and events | Stories, DMs, comments |
How to run both without double the work
Plan one calendar that covers both platforms.
Create in vertical or square formats so content fits each feed.
Use Meta Business Suite to schedule to Facebook and Instagram together.
Adjust the caption where it matters, such as adding a link on Facebook.
Handle replies in one inbox. Business Suite shows messages and comments from both.
When to focus on just one
Pick one platform if:
You have very little time, so doing both badly is worse than doing one well
Your audience clearly sits on one side, for example a teen focused brand on Instagram
One platform already brings most of your enquiries
You can keep the other profile up to date with basic info so people who look you up still find you.
What about ads?
Meta ads can run on both platforms from one campaign. Many small businesses let Meta place ads automatically at first, then check which placement brings the cheapest leads. We cover that in our paid ads and lead generation service.
The short answer
Visual business with younger customers: lead with Instagram. Local trade or service with older customers: lead with Facebook. Unsure: run both from one plan and let the enquiries tell you.
Our social media marketing team can manage both accounts from a single content calendar.
